how to prep your home for the fall
Fall has arrived in Chicagoland, and we are here for it! Read our 10 tips for what to do this fall to get your home ready for the season.
1. clean + cover your outdoor patio/furniture.
We know - it's still nice to have a fall bonfire or two before you start wrapping up. We recommend to at least start cleaning early, so when the chilly weather comes in for good and it's time to put the covers on you're not overworked. Try to cover up all the furniture so it stays well maintained when the cold weather and rain hits.
2. check the roof.
Your roof may show no signs of problem all summer; then, when snow starts collecting suddenly you see a leak! Give your roof an overall checkup to make sure you won't run into this problem. Once winter comes, it can be a challenge to deal with a leaky roof, especially with a pile of snow on top of it.
3. prep your chimney.
Before you light the first fall fire, schedule a safety inspection and cleaning for your chimney. A certified chimney sweep can ensure it's safe and ready for use. Also, don't forget to stock up on firewood for the cozy fall nights ahead!
4. plan your garden for the next season.
If you're dreaming of a vibrant spring garden, now is the time to start planting flower bulbs. Properly prepare the soil and select a location for planting to ensure a stunning display when spring arrives.
5. check for damaged seals and windows.
Examine all windows and doors for drafts. Seal any gaps using weatherstripping or caulking to keep your home warm and energy-efficient throughout the season.
6. clear your gutters.
Fall gets cold and rainy, and any wet leaves collecting in your gutters are not a great mix to leave for the winter. Clear the gutters of debris to ensure water flows freely and prevent any issues during winter.
7. insulate exterior wall pipes.
Exposed pipes can be vulnerable to freezing and bursting when the cold hits. Insulate them with pipe insulation sleeves or heat tape to avoid costly repairs.
8. prepare landscaping equipment.
Don't forget your lawnmower and other landscaping equipment! Drain the fuel and store them properly for the winter to prevent fuel degradation and damage.
9. give your snowblower a quality check.
Before the first snowfall, test your snowblower to make sure it's in good working condition. Change the oil, replace spark plugs, and clean or replace air filters as needed. Ensure you have enough fuel and essential snow removal tools on hand. See if it still works and if you are happy with its current functionality for when the snowfall hits.
10. get out your blankets and candles.
Not everyone enjoys the cold weather, but keep in mind all the changes you can make. Get all your cozy blankets and candle out to enjoy the cooler season at home.
Start getting ready early so you can enjoy the beauty of fall while staying comfortable and ensuring your home remains well-maintained!
